Prof. Philip Howard

Professor Philip Howard
Consultant Antimicrobial Pharmacist, Leeds Teaching Hospitals and University of Leeds

Philip Howard is Consultant Pharmacist in Antimicrobials at the Leeds Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust, National AMR Project Lead at NHS-Improvement and Honorary Visiting Professor at Leeds University.

He is a spokesman for the Royal Pharmaceutical Society on Antimicrobials, and President of BSAC. He was a member of the Dept of Health ARHAI Antimicrobial Stewardship Group that produced the original Start Smart then Focus Antimicrobial Stewardship Guidelines, and the HPA Primary Care Unit which helped produce the RCGP TARGET guidance on Antimicrobial Stewardship in Primary Care.

His research interests include Antimicrobial Stewardship, and led the first global hospital Antimicrobial Stewardship survey. He has been involved in AMS education and training across the world with BSAC, ESCMID ESGAP and FIP organisations.

Laura MacLachlan, Lead OPAT Clinical Nurse Specialist,Hull University Teaching Hospital

I qualified form The University of Hull as an Adult Nurse in 2008. Early in my career I worked in renal, general medicine and medical elderly before moving into a rotational post in OPAT, Immunology and Haemophilia. It quickly became apparent that my interest was in OPAT and I became the Lead OPAT CNS in 2015.
This role is both challenging and dynamic as it is constantly evolving to meet the needs of the patients as well as being a team manager. I co-ordinate all of the clinic time tables and liaise with all members of the MDT to ensure great patient care. Alongside the traditional OPAT clinic I run a complex oral antibiotic monitoring clinic for patients on regimes including Linezolid, Tedizolid and Pristinamycin. The number of the complex oral antibiotic monitoring clinics has doubled over recent years as a result of the findings from the OVIVA study and is likely to further increase now I have completed my Non-Medical Prescribing. There is also a joint podiatry clinic which I oversee within the OPAT clinic. I also run a vascular access service for patients require IV access for OPAT as well as a surveillance blood culture monitoring clinic. These clinics allow the optimisation of the use of antimicrobials, prevent the development of resistance and improve patient outcomes.

Professor Jonathan Sandoe

Jonathan Sandoe is Associate Clinical Professor of Medical Microbiology at the University of Leeds and Honorary Consultant Microbiologist at Leeds Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust. Member of the Leeds Endocarditis Service, a multidisciplinary team which has managed patients with infective endocarditis (IE) at LTHT since 2004. He has a longstanding interest in the management and prevention of IE and, since 2002 has been a member of the British Society for Antimicrobial Chemotherapy Endocarditis Working Party.
